Calle de la Reina - Sight-seeing / Attractions in Valencia, Spain |
The old fisherman district of Cabanyal as a whole is a very pleasant and atomspheric area to explore, with its sleepy traditional Spanish charm and a motley variety of curious summer houses. Cabanyal has a lot of personality both in its lifestyle (own identity and festivities, such as Semana Santa) and design - the houses here are an endless slideshow of unique characters. It is mainly the Spanish summer architecture of the beginning XX century but, more importantly, it is also one of the best places in Valencia to observe the use of decorative ceramics, typical for this region. Particulalry rich is the area beginning with Calle de la Reina - the main street of Cabanyal - and going towards the beach, where you can find some of the most interesting samples in the area, both employing ceramics and not. The use of ceramics in architecture here is so unique that it has in the past warranted international studies. It has to be said though that the area is not a polished tourist attraction, so you migth find it shabby in places, but it gives it a certain air of authenticity. To see the ceramics you generally just have to walk around the main streets, there is no specific place where they concentrate.
