Iglesia Santa Maria del Mar - Sight-seeing in Valencia, Spain |
Iglesia Santa Maria del Mar is sort of the cathedral of Cabanyal - this state-within-a-state maritime district of Valencia. Since its incorporation into the growing Valencia of XIX century, Cabanyal has always tried extra hard to preserve its own identity - the celebrations of Semana Santa being one of many elements of this movement. The locals call the church "the maritime cathedral" or, simply, "the Temple". It is a an elegant yet monumental building, known as the best preserved Rennaisance church in Valencia, in front of an atmospheric pedestrian square. The interior is just as lavish, often done in pure gold. The church was built in XVI century after a wooden cross was fished out of the sea (interpreted as a divine sign), and that cross is still inside on display. During the Semana Santa, the church truly becomes the religious centre of Valencia (since only Cabanyal has full-on celebrations), heaving with the festive activities for over 2 weeks.
